Clinical Services

DaCross Services, the veterinary orofacial, ENT and advanced surgery referral service and consultancy run by Dr. David Crossley provides a clinical referral and radiograph and CT reading service to veterinary colleagues requiring assistance with cases. The service is based in the UK, but Dr. Crossley makes regular visits abroad and regularly consults at Animal Hospital Postojna, an advanced purpose built veterinary clinic in Slovenia, not far from the Italian border.

The medical areas covered by these clinical services include:

  • Oral medicine
  • Veterinary dentistry
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • CT diagnosis and image reconstruction
  • Ear, nose and throat diagnosis and treatment
  • Endoscopic surgery (laparoscopy, thoracoscopy etc.
  • Advanced general soft tissue surgery
  • Oncological (tumour) surgery
  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Medical imaging

DaCross Services also provides a range of nonclinical services.

Referrals

The clinical service only handles cases referred by other veterinary surgeons. Consultations cannot be arranged and animals will not be seen until the case has been referred and appropriate medical details supplied by the animal's normal veterinary surgeon. If you have an animal you suspect of having a problem that Dr. Crossley and his colleagues might be able to help with, please take it to your normal veterinary surgeon in the first instance. If you or your vet then consider that referral is required your vet just needs to contact us or one of the clinics at which we see cases.

## Dr. Crossley is based in AMCRS Manchester where he has a dedicated dental and oral surgery suite. This allows a broader range of oral and maxillofacial investigations and procedures, and more detailed follow-up, to be performed in Manchester than in Thurnscoe or St. Helens. CT scanning is available from the Manchester site.

‡ ‡ AMCRS Thurnscoe has facilities for the majority of dentistry cases. MRI scanning is available at the Thurnscoe site.

Dr. Crossley is typically available for clinical consultation in Manchester two days a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, and in Thurnscoe one day a week, on Wednesdays. Appointments in St. Helens are normally scheduled for Thursdays. Depending on his operating schedule, appointments may be available on other days.

As Dr. Crossley also regularly provides clinical and teaching services abroad there will be times when he is not available at short notice. In these cases arrangements are made for one of his colleagues to deal with cases until he returns..

Radiology and CT Scan Interpretation Service

Dr. Crossley offers an oro-facial radiograph interpretation service. Veterinary surgeond: Please contact Dr. Crossley or an AMCRS receptionist to check where and how to send radiographs. Digital or digitised radiograph images can be sent by e-mail. Due to their size, CT scan sequences are best sent on CD or DVD-rom. As Dr. Crossley is heavily involved in teaching he makes frequentl trips abroad so to ensure a prompt response, please always check before sending material for interpretation.

Advice for owners

The place to start if you suspect your animal has any medical problem is your normal veterinary surgeon. Do not be afraid of explaining your concerns, but be prepared for the need to investigate any problem that is found. In some cases problems are simple to identify and treat, however, blood tests, x-rays, examination under a general anaesthetic, biopsy etc. will often be necessary. When animals are referred it is not always possible to perform treatments immediately, however, Dr. Crossley and his colleagues try to minimise the amount of travelling involved for pets and their owners and when possible will undertake straightforward treatments the same day when time permits. When prior investigation is required it may be necessary to await laboratory or other results before proceeding. Again, if possible treatment will be performed at the same time as investigations if theer is time and this does not compromise patient safety.

Routine oral hygiene measures are essential to control periodontal disease and prevent this insidious infectious condition causing chronic damage to vital internal organs as well as the tooth support structures. In most dental and orofacial surgery cases, additional oral hygiene measures will be required during the healing period, over and above the routine daily tooth brushing that pet cats and dogs (and people) should be receiving.

Information on some common dental and other oral problems (identification, prevention and treatment) is available from the dental information pages.
